Is there water near Round Valley now?

Postby backpackpack » Wed Sep 25, 2013 4:20 pm

Hello everyone, I am planning to go from Humber Park up to Round Valley this weekend. Do I need to carry all of my water or is there running water right now?

Thanks everyone

p.s. I have been reading here for a few years, this is my first time posting.

How are you planning to go from Humber Park to Round Valley? I believe the PCT North of Saddle Junction to Strawberry JCT is still closed as well as the other trails in the burn area (Willow Creek), unless they have just re-opened, you can't get to Round Valley unless you take Deer Springs, Marion Mountain, Seven Pines or Fuller Ridge trails. Ranger station is closed today and tomorrow, anyone else heard anything about PCT being re-opened?

Uh oh... I was planning to take Devils Slide, north on PCT, then east at wellmans divide... I guess I need to call the ranger tomorrow.

I was up there Sunday and indeed the only trail from Saddle Junction that was open was PCT south to the fire lookout.

Darn it!

I will call the ranger tomorrow to see what is going on. In the other thread about trail closures, it looked like some people were told it was ok to hike there, and others were told it was not ok.

Are there any other campgrounds I can hike to from Humber park that don't use the PCT?

I was up on Saturday, definitely not letting people go that way. Devil's Slide is only going to get you to Tahquitz.

Are we allowed to camp around Tahquitz peak? I am not sure how the permitting works, I usually go to anza-borrego where you can just camp wherever you want pretty much.

Thanks for the info everyone.

You might want to try Little Round Valley in the State Park Wilderness. You can access that area from Marion Mountain, Seven Pines, Fuller Ridge, or Deer Springs trailheads. All are currently open. There is a good source for water where the trail crosses a spring about a half mile before you get to LRV. Have fun.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think deer springs to LRV looks like a good bet. That is probably what I will try for.

Thanks everyone!

Tomorrow (Friday 9/27) I am planning to head up Marion Mountain to the peak and then possibly wander around and camp for a night in Little Round Valley and then hike down in the morning.

Can I get another confirmation there is water by Little Round Valley? Is the spring year-round?

I REALLY don't want to carry two days of water if I can avoid it. ;)

Thanks in advance!
