(Yet Another) Skyline rescue?

I have this second hand so can't verify, but Emin emailed me yesterday afternoon after coming down from the tram--he said there was a Skyline rescue in progress. According to what he heard, some hikers got stuck at/ran out of water at 5300 feet. Supposedly they left Palm Springs at 9 a.m. (!)

Anyone else heard about this?

Hope they're OK, but boy is it a bad idea to do Skyline ths time of year, and starting at 9:00 AM? That's just plain nuts.

I heard something about this, second hand so I'm not sure if I have my facts straight. I heard it was an individual who started well before dawn, got lost and didn't find the trail again till 9 am, then continued up and ran out of water. It seems other hikers encountered him but were not able to help much. He was rescued by helicopter. Perhaps someone with more information can fill in the gaps and make needed corrections.

Interesting. That certainly makes more sense. Although the hiker's actions still weren't exactly sensible. There are times when it's good to give up, and finding yourself (still) at the bottom of Skyline at 9 a.m., is one of them.

if you were the last person to get a ride off of skyline from sar and you would like your pack and gear that was left behind, plmk. looks like you had quite a struggle and im sure leaving that much good gear behind was difficult.


btw, the amount of weight you were carrying was insane, i only had to carry it 3000' and that was ridiculous.

Also to everyone else, rescue box 2 is now loaded with all kinds of trail mix and cliff bars, power bars, snickers etc...help yourself and thank the rescued person.

i usually keep a snickers in my packs as emergency food, even after melting and getting solid again over and over, theyre still a great food

All i've heard is second hand info that the guy was fairly well prepared but lost the trail and ended up spending the night at around 5000'. The next day he gave in and phoned for help and was rescued safely.

That's interesting, that puts a very different spin on the story. In that case he must have been on the trail for 30plus hours.
