Fire in Mountain Center darkens Palm Springs ...

General Palm Springs area.

Here's the take-it-with-a-grain-of-salt MODIS overlay *those western-most points could very well belong on the ridgetop above Saddle Junction.* If the satellite is imaging at an oblique angle from the east, you can imagine how, with it's poor resolution, it could mis-project the hot spots down the steep slope behind the ridge (at least that's how I'm choosing to understand it):

The MODIS kml is here: http://activefiremaps.fs.fed.us/googleearth.php

for those of you watching the weather - I've found this to be a great source for accurate (10min delay) radar --- so near ... there's a layer for rain

I joined a number of time-lapse videos taken from the Toro Peak Web Cam and uploaded them to flickr.

The videos run from midnight to midnight. Note that Toro Peak is 25 miles from San Jacinto Peak, so don't expect too much resolution. Just the same, the fire is still large enough to be visible on a wide angle camera at that distance. Since San Jacinto is northwest of Toro Peak, it shows up on the sides of both the north and west views from the tower, not in the center.

The videos from the 18th take about 10 seconds before you can really make anything out, but the ones from the 19th are awesome, in a totally horrible way. It's like watching a loved one suffer while you're powerless to do anything to help.

NOTE that flickr isn't all that great at videos - it works best if you click the play button on the lower left, NOT the arrow in the center.

Their lives are at stake at any random turn of events, but they fight on anyway. I'm hoping the #@%$& fire stops before it ruins more old and beautiful forest. But come what may, I want to say I appreciate the battle they are fighting. Their fearlessness in the face of danger is inspiring.

Interesting map of the fire's impact this morning, from the Redlands GIS company:

Low clouds in Palm Springs this morning, aircraft have commented on how strange it is to fight fire above the clouds. They reported some precipitation so lets hope for a down pour.
Happy Trails!

I find the radio chatter between helicopters (I assume) and hotshots to be fascinating ... such cooperation
