Mourning the loss of our beloved woods, it can be hard to remember that life is larger than this, and some joys still occur.

Congratulations for your family.

Hiked up the Shannon trail in Palm Springs this morning. Looking across to the Indian Canyons looks like the fire burned Andreas/Murray canyons to just above Maynard Mine. South Fork Palm Canyon burned to around the junction of Jo Pond and Pelton trails. To the south Palm View, Cedar Spring, Pine Mtn areas still had isolated smoke plumes.

Looking at the mountain right now (from Cat City), the plume just seems to be marching steadily north. Wondering what you're seeing Florian, assuming you're in Palm Springs?

Cynthia, i'm seeing the same. No flames visible. The fire "seems" not so bad this evening but that's only because the wind has shifted and we're not under the smoke plume nor being covered in ash. But i know the fire is now burning high up in the old growth forest and i'm feeling very sad. I don't know where i'm going to hike next summer.

I must say this fire is turning out to be a tragic loss for all Southern Californians. I remember the loss of Cuyamaca state park in 2003. That fire burned 95% of the forest. Now there is a fire in San Jacinto burning in one of most beautiful forests in all of Southern Cal. I have been hiking and backpacking in our local mountains for 30 years. I can't believe the rate we are losing our precise mountains. I shed a tear for the now burning old growth forest that I have loved for so many years.

Thing's are looking good here in Idyllwild tonight the smoke is up high there is no wind it's kinda spooky quiet. About 1/2 hour before dark 4 large fixed wing aircraft and a DC10 did a full on retardent drop on Southridge trail. I was out walking checking how things were looking and it freaked me out since I live just down the hill from South ridge. My freand just happend to be up on Thomas mountain on his moto taking pick's I contacted him and he took pick's of the drop's from that direction and told me there is no fire anywere around there. So I'm thinking they are painting the mountians around Idyllwild as a percaution. I have look'd at the pick's personaly and can say there is no fire in them looking form Thomas Mnt and no fire on this side by looking at it myself. We have a ton of firetrucks in town they have been staging up at mile high cafe 1/2 block from my house and heading off from there deeper into town and Fern Valley. There is a fire glow tonight for the first time since this started up behind the saddle that can be seen from my place 6 miles and 3100ft below the Top of Devels slide. So things have realy quieted down this evening and from what I can tell from being here it look's good for Idyllwild. I'm not very close to Fern valley but If they are dropping all that retardent down here were there is no fire they must have that end of Tahquitz coverd also.
