They're not joking around when they ask about your dentist. A mandatory evacuation means you need to leave. If you wait to leave until the fire reaches town you WILL be getting in the way of fire equipment and personnel who are responding to save your neighbor's homes. Not to single you out, I know there are lots of others who are doing the same thing as you.

Well if I lived in town that would be true. I'm out of town towards Hemet.

Thanks for that info SomeGuy. it's good to know. For what it's worth, I was just in Palm Springs about half an hour ago and the smoke chute actually looks better--less black. Maybe a good sign. Let's hope.

I do agree with you there are people I see over and over again driving all around being looky loos. Our truck hasen't moved for days and God forbid the fire dose come down the hill it's going to hit the Fern Valley part of town 3 miles from my house first. That's why they eveacated Fern valley first and let us stay if we wanted I'm on the second to last street about one minute from the last street in IDY towards Hemet by car. For the folk's that stayed at the other end of town it's a diffrent story. I would have left day's ago if I lived up there. I thru hiked the PCT last year and learned a bit about fires as there were more than a few fires in our way luckly there's not hundred's of hikers up there now.

Nice picture scottmac. Scary, but a great pic.

Backwoods, thanks for reporting on what you see up there. Our place is on Fern Valley Road near Encino, so yeah, if the fire comes down Devils Slide, our place is probably toast.

Almost lost it when I saw that outlier MODIS hotspot on the map earlier today.

Tankers were dropping retardant around Hidden Lake this afternoon (7/19). Listening to the radio chatter they were being careful to not actually hit the dry lake bed itself. Fire is up to Landell Peak with some spot fires northward.
