May I suggest you hike the north side of Murray peak (Clare Burgess tr.)after you increase your fitness, it's not real easy to find. You can attempt to find it from the dirt road east of Von's Rimrock, but you need to use 2 dirt roads #& a couple trails to reach it.

Easier to hike up Araby (by SouthRidge Rim Crest) to top, go straight 1/4 mi. veer left & head east of old dirt road 1/2 mi. & look for the trail off to your right. You'll have to drop into a wash & back out to access the bottom of the trail.
It's like 2 Lykken's (or Museum trails) put together & one that many of us Skyliners use as a trainer.

thank you for the advice... i would love to learn this trail... i did bike a route up from behind vons rimrock with a cathedral city detective but he pooped out before we made it to murrays peak so we turned back  ... care to show me sometime? the were a lot of lil trails out there and i would be worried about getting on the wrong one... lemmeknow

Murray peak

If a few of us do that trail soon I'll let you know, but now that the weather is nice, it will be Skyline on Sat's, unless there's multi layers of snow & ice.

An easier way to hike Murray peak would be:
Araby (from the bottom of South Ridge (rd to Bob Hope's pad) to the top, go straight (south) veer left at fork on dirt rd, head east until the rd veer right into a wash. Cross over this wash, come out & you'll be at the bottom of Murray peak tr. named after Clara Burgess, long time Desert Rider.

The easier way to come down is the west side to Wildhorse tr, all north all the way to the Bern's & back to Araby.

Have fun,

:D made it to the peak from the tram on 9/23... wow i really underestimated that hike... i figured it was only a 2,000 ft elevation gain, but wow i had NO idea it would be 11-12 miles round trip... did it roundtrip in 5 hrs w/ my friend and that includes getting a lil turned around and off trail on the way down... today @ work i felt like a million bucks but i felt like somebody beat my entire body with the moneybags... i REALLY enjoy the feeling of being sore after extreme physical activity... my face and scalp got all sunburned... really underestimated the UV exposure up there and the factor the thin air would play into my performance... i truly feel if that trail was at the valley floor i would have done it faster... well i dunno if i will make it all the way up to the summit in october but i sure plan on trying 8) ! we'll see how i feel once i make it up to round valley -shrugs-... last year i started out at 6am but this time around i DEFINATELY will need to start out around midnight the day before before if i plan on having a chance at the summit considering last year it took me 8 hrs to reach the tram and the days are so short + the sun sets so early in late october... i also got a season pass so i am sure i'll run into some-o-ya up there
