Fire in Mountain Center darkens Palm Springs ...

General Palm Springs area.

Yes, sorry Hal, you're right, I spoke imprecisely. The wind will (according to forecasts)be blowing FROM the east, pushing the fire and smoke west, of course. Thanks for 'clearing that up" (groan.)

Let's hope they get the fire knocked back somewhat during the night.

Careful. There's a person on this forum named Cynthia23 who might flame anyone who mentions risky stuff. :-)

Another webcam view of fire

They have re-directed the Mt San Jacinto webcam to view the fire area. Link is http://www.fsvisimages.com/fstemplate.aspx?site=saja1
The difference between a good hike and a bad one is usually just a reflection of what I bring with me.

I talked with a tribal ranger at the road closure on south Palm Canyon Drive this morning and he said none of the palm groves in the Indian Canyons have burned. The canyons are currently closed to the public however.

I could see a smoke plume in the San Jacintos when I went hiking in the Verdugo Mountains on Monday. I could not see a smoke plume when I went earlier this morning. I hope that's an indicator of good news.

Hi, Jim. Sorry to report there is a huge smoke plume at the moment. Flames must really be into something heavy right now. :(

Non-official and non-verified, but looks like Cedar Spring may be burning now. Crap.

I'm not sure how up to date those maps are, but it looks like Apple and Fobes Canyons have largely burned. The PCT appears to have been hit from Antsell Rock down to at least Palm View Peak. Dang. Now I really regret having to skip Palm View and Cone Peaks. Hard to tell from the maps what's been hit on the east side.

I guess the winds are now pushing the flames to the NW?
