The tram weather is specific to the tram station, and can be used as a general guide. You might also want to check a regional weather forecast report before going up into the SJW, or any other So Cal mountains.
With the exception of this strange year, late summer & fall usually have more thunderstorms, they can be isolated to certain areas, and they usually appear in the late afternoons. The storms are more on the desert side of the mountains, and can form (and dissapate) quickly. I wouldn't put off a hike if the weather is predicted to be fair, just keep an eye on the sky if you're hiking near the peaks so you won't get caught.
