I have no idea why this guy was out hiking today. At age 71, he should've known better.

Now, according to the Desert Sun, the hiker was not rescued but was found dead.

Sympathy to friends and family.

not much of a hike

Not much of a hiking area.
With high utility bills and poor conditions for running the swamp coolers, many try to beat the heat in shaded outdoor areas. It may have been worst at home.

Thanks for posting this Hal. This story is almost unbelievable. But I guess having lived here a while I no longer fully understand how much non-locals don't understand the severity of the heat. Thinking back to when I first arrived, I didn't really get how dangerous the heat could be and did some foolish things too. My sympathy to his family. How sad that he leaves behind a young son.
