General Palm Springs area.

Next trip will likely be an overnighter for me - that way I'll have more daylight hours to explore.

Kathy,

There are some ways to cut the mileage from Hwy 74 but I prefer not to discuss in a public forum. The shortcuts still make for a long day but are preferable to luging a backpack around in my opinion.

Email if you want more info.

Trail below Live Oak Springs has recently been cleared. No problems passing on foot.

Thanks for the update! Timely as a group of us plan on doing a hike in that area next week.

Hope to start in Garner Valley and go over the crest via Butterfly Peak trail system and then head down to Live Oak Springs and Palm Canyon ending up at the gate on Palm Canyon Drive. Long day but worth it.

Some questions.

1. Water flowing at Live Oak Springs?

2. Any idea who is clearing the brush from these seldom used trails? Thank you who ever you are!

3. Where did you find the info about the Government Trail and the CCC building it? I too have an old map and it shows the The Government Trail. Have always wondered why it was called "The Government Trail" and the history behind it.

Again thanks for the update. Helps a lot.

Interesting stuff.

Have taken the Government trail numerous times since discovering it 5 or 6 years ago. Would agree that it is one well built trail in many areas and it would be wonderful to have it brushed out. However those are special places up there and the fewer folks that find those places the better in my opinion. Would hate to see it turn into another Skyline situation.

Also have accessed the Cabin via the South Oak Canyon trail. Hard to find but a lot less brush. All well worth the effort.

Wondering if anyone has gone north & west of the Cabin to Bald Peak. Have a map from 25 years ago showing a trail but that is a long ways from anywhere. We have gone down a old trail part way down to Bald Peak from the Little Desert area of PCT and the Cedar Springs Junction. Very Brushy but it is still there.

Wellman's built some pretty interesting places/trails and apparently they are still running the Longhorns?
