Climber Dies From Fall on Tahquitz Rock 5/17/13

Postby halhiker » Fri May 17, 2013 10:46 pm

A climber died from about a 100 foot fall today on Tahquitz. Another article in the Press Enterprise said he was 21 years old. Sympathy to family and friends.

Dying sure takes the fun out of it.

What a tragedy - my condolences to the family and friends of this young man.

(The Press-Enterprise had a brief article saying, "A person reported that he and a friend were hiking the Vampire Formation Hiking Trail when the friend fell." With all the hiking I do up there, how did I ever miss this "hiking trail"?! Just another example of reporting that is off track.)

Lucas was climbing Taquits/Lilly rock. He lived in Idyllwild and worked part time at the outfitter's up here. Lucas was a great young man happy and full of life. He'll be missed by all that have had the pleasure of meeting him. I know I have taken many chances in life as most on this list proubly have? It's just a rock above him feel and knocked him out and down he went acording to his facebook timeline and his sister say's the paper's have it all wrong. That's one of my biggest wory's in nature thing's falling on me from above. RIP Lucas

Here is a link to a very moving account of the accident written by his partner on the climb, who was also his father:

Thanks for posting that link Cameron, that took a lot of courage for Greg (don't know him) to write. We can all learn & hopefully move forward from these incidences.
Sending positive vibes out to all involved.

So sad. I remember Lucas from Nomad Ventures. Nice kid. What a tragic loss.
