I love this loop and haven't done it since October.
The Craigmeister and I took the first tram up and headed over to Wellman's. About halfway up from Round Valley, snow covered the trail so we just headed up the ridge and over to the junction. I haven't been on the trail from Wellman's Divide to the Strawberry junction in months and had forgotten that it's brushy and rocky. Snow covered the trail in shady sections but was manageable. The Cienega was flowing nicely. Crag pointed out the meadow containing the remnants of Wellman's cabin.
Before long, we were at Saddle junction. Started heading over to Tahquitz...and heading over...and heading over...hmm...who moved the junction? Suddenly, an Asian hiker popped out of the brush off-trail (picture a Jack in the Box) and asked if we were headed to Tahquitz
We finally reached the trail and started up.
I became uncomfortable when we reached a steep snowy slope. I hate traversing over snow when the consequences of failing are grave. Craig offered his microspikes but I was happy to turn around and hang out at the junction. He and the other gentleman made it to the fire tower and back uneventfully. Craig and I continued on our loop, passing meadows and continuing on and up.
Willow creek was flowing nicely but it's still very early in the season. I love the climb up to Hidden Divide. It is very pretty, mostly shaded and less traveled compared to Wellman's. As we crested, Craig pointed out a cave where a volunteer found relics from the 1930's. Continued past the restoration area and started dropping down to Long Valley. Passed the Ranger Station and went into beer mode going up the ramp. Frank took good care of us as always -- great finish to a stellar day.
