Hm, not sure if my point is coming through. I feel like people are taking this the wrong way (as a critique of disheveled people!) That's not my point--indeed, I'm majorly disheveled myself.

My concern is specific to Skyline, really. On Skyline (versus most other trails) you are actually quite likely to encounter people who are not hikers (i.e. drug users, the mentally ill) because a significant portion of the trail is IN, or adjacent to, an urban area. This is not something you're going to run into on trails that require a car to get to the TH, which, in SoCal, is nearly all of them. When you're on the lower portions of SKyline at 4 a.m., it's as if you're walking through a deserted, not-that-great urban neighborhood at 4. a.m, just after the bars close. I've run into guys who were stark naked, people having sex, people getting stoned--you name it. I'm just saying--be aware of this issue on this trail, esp. if you're alone.
