It appears that this guy is either trying to make people angry as a game (a troll), or he is about to spam us with a web site that sells "near-miraculous" "micro-electronic technology." Daniel, do you have anything to say about that?

Yep, those baby pics can be cute. BTW, Perry, they're not necessarily all that cute right when they pop out. When our Natalie was born, her big sister (who was 5 at the time) came in the room, took one look, and said, "Ew. Yuck." Natalie still had a bit of vernix on her skin and her sister thought she looked "like lasagna". (Sorry to anyone of delicate constitution if that was over the top. Just reality from the eyes of a 5 year old. Sure made me laugh at the time!)

Incidentally, I agree with your analysis Perry. Too aggressive to be described as just a normal, opinionated post. And the grocery store comment was laughable. Maybe he's trying to market a product for the elderly...I'm getting closer and closer to that description, and sometimes I find myself at the grocery store asking myself, "Now what did I come here for?" I can still find my way home, but I guess it is a good idea to carry a "celfone" so I can call my wife and ask her what I'm supposed to be getting.

With competence and judgement the wilderness has been human friendly since, well, before we were humans. Without these qualities, whether you have a gps or not is probably the least of your worries.

Insisting on a brittle technological fix for all cases (including those where nothing is broken) seems like a mandate for undercutting the very competencies and judgement skills we ought to be valuing above all else.

lol. Yeah, when my daughter was born, I thought to myself, "that must be the placenta". Then she moved and I noticed that the "placenta" had ears. It ain't pretty, that's for sure. But they clean up pretty good later.

Daniel actually would benefit from some trail time with experienced folk like those around here, but he recoiled defensively, which is/was predictable in retrospect of reviewing his history. Just as we, like many others, recoil at being called idiots if we fail to share someone else's opinion--regardless of relative backgrounds or experience.

A Noob who Knows Best and makes big social faux pas can have issues other than trollage. That can be especially revelatory when they fail to respond appropriately to the tolerant and helpful responses made by folks like zip and guest and Elwood, and fail to show empathy or sympathy for the deaths and misfortunes of others.

In fact I'd be worried that Daniel is just the sort who could fall victim to his intense and stubborn certainty and reliance on technology to spare him unpleasant outcomes. One hopes that the inevitable 'learning experience' is not too costly. I hope he does find someone with whom to hike, and develops skilz to accompany tech on his mountain strollz.

It is good to step back and take a look at the big picture here, even though much of the jabbing may seem warranted.
This thread has gone all over the place, so there's some interesting energy for sure.
It's nice that you have attempted to at least figure where Daniel might be coming from, and offer some helpful insight.

It's tempting to get defensive when people lash out & accuse, or when a person has such a adamant opinion, they close off being open to others, (especially when many of those have a lot of experience to draw from).

I wish others well, so let's get out & enjoy the outdoors in our own, safe way, even if it means taking some risks!
