Off the board for a while with a broken leg. Now I'm back and looking to do some HPS peaks this weekend on the Desert Divide. Prevoiusly, my understanding (and when I've been chastised by volunteer rangers) is that ONLY entering the designated SJ Wilderness Area requires a permit. Thus Spitler Pk TH does, Fobes Rch Rd. TH does not (unless you're going N on the PCT), Cedar Springs doesn't, etc.
Summitpost confused me though as Lion, Pyramid, Pine Mtn. pages all have under red tape "Please stop by the Idyllwild Ranger Station to pick up your permit" even though the route for all of those is Cedar Springs TH.
Is this a mistake, over-reaching by the ranger station, have things changed since last year, etc? the whole point of those is to NOT drive to Idyllwild.
Thanks all.
