Last Saturday, 1/19/13, two of us took the tram up at 2:50pm and started our hike to Round Valley. We used micropikes and they were perfect for the trail conditions. The trail was well packed and icy in some sections. On the way we had the pleasure of running into Hikin_Jim. It was fun to finally meet him in person. We got to Round Valley with time to spare before the sun went down. Water was trickling out of the spigot. My thermometer said it was 28 degrees when I went to sleep. The next morning we woke up early and left for the SJ summit. We were rewarded with spectacular views when we got to Wellmans Divide. When we hit the Miller's saddle we took the backside of the ridge up. The wind was very calm and air temperature great for hiking with no jacket. On the way down we took the direct route to Tamarack. There was a nice snow shoe trail for us to follow. Once we got to Tamarack, we had to make our own trail back to Round Valley. We were postholing into knee deep snow. Once at Round Valley we packed up our gear and went home. It was yet another spectacular trip to SJ. Here's a video link of our trip.
