PCT Hike highway 74 to Snow Creek Village 5/31-6/5

Hi Ellen,
Glad you liked my trip report. Actually the Snow Creek brush is more of a nuisance than a killer. You don't need a long sleeve shirt for it, though the long pants is a good idea, at least between 3500' to 6000'. Are you going to hike to the tram in one day? That's one crazy long hike!

whitebark: You gotta meet Ellen. If you were a fly on the wall (or tree, I suppose) during one of her solo hikes, here's what you might hear:

Ellen: Oops. Looks like both my legs were severed when I fell off that cliff. Lemme see if I can stitch 'em back on with manzanita twigs. Yep! They're fine now. Hmmm. About that blood loss. I'll just knock down a gatorade and tell my body to handle it. No whining on the trail! It'll be fine."

She did the hike last year. After getting lost at the trailhead (it's like the Blair Witch project over there, everyone gets lost at the beginning part). Oh yeah. She actually got lost twice. A year apart. In the darkness. Alone. And finished it just in time to have a beer. She'll be fine.

So, come down and hike with us in October! Hopefully we'll have a group going together - I'll show Ellen the trailhead (heh, heh, Hi Ellen! You're reading this, aren't you?), and I'll buy you both a beer at the top. You're invited, and you can write up the TR!

Regarding my "problem" finding the Snow Creek PCT trail head, I have a similarly funny story that involves Palm Springs.

Just about every year I speak at a sports medicine conference in Palm Springs in June. For many years, it was at the Riviera hotel, then the venue changed to the Renaissance hotel (originally the Wyndam). I drove out to the hotel and park by the conference center. There was certainly a conference going on -- only not MY conference

I'm starting to get a little anxious as I have under an hour to get to the conference. Hmm...maybe it's back at the Riviera. I head over to the Riviera and (to the great delight of the organizers) get there about 30 minutes before I'm due to speak. After being introduced, I told the audience about going to wrong hotel and they cracked up.

Now every year that I go to this conference, the head sports medicine ortho says, "Hi, I'm really glad to see that you came to the right hotel"

This happened in 2000, the same year that I sustained a spiral fracture of my fifth metatarsal while hiking up Skyline. I was wearing running shoes and broke it at 2 K. Kept on going to the tram. My first bone plate and screws.

Hmm...maybe that was an omen

A bunch of us did that hike in 2009. Fun time.

I did a day hike from 74 to the Tram about 5 years ago. That was a lot of fun.
