Hiking Jim, the entire hike is comprised of two segments of Trails (Boo Hoff and Cactus Springs) and they are connected by a route called the Guadalupe. The Guadalupe section is about 5.6 miles and has a clear use trail but it is waaaay more difficult to follow than say the Skyline or Sid Davis routes. Thanks to fellow hikers like Bluerail, there now are good sets of cairns that get you through most of it, although it's still easy to get off-route. So one must be alert.
For sure if you find yourself scrambling in rocks or in dense brush - you've lost the route. Kathryn and I led our subgroup and never encountered any difficult sections. But for sure it's easy to wander off the route in many sections.
It's similar to a other of my favorite, rarely used Trails - Jo Pond. Both are a great day afoot in nature.
