Henninger Flats Camp

Postby Hikin_Jim » Mon Nov 26, 2012 3:32 pm

I just posted a trip report on my blog for a little post-Thanksgiving backpacking trip to Henninger Flats in Altadena, CA.

It was really nice. Perfect weather for a gentle sway in the hammock with my daughter. Check out the video on the TR. Yes, she's cute when she talks. :)

And some pretty spectacular views were to be had at night.

Awesome TR! Nothing like some quality daddy/daughter time. I have only been up to Henninger once, and that was just to hike through it to Lower Eaton canyon, but thought what a wonderful place to camp.

That is one cute kid you have Hikin Jim! I rarely say that, because honestly not every kid is cute (I certainly was not).

Congrats on your 10K accomplishment. You inspire me to get out more. Plus, you're the total package in that you're a great hiker, writer, and photographer. Not too many people have all those skills.

It was really fun. She's a little charmer. :)

It's a nice spot to camp. Wilderness? No, but a great spot for kids to run around and play, and there are flush toilets which is a big plus for kids who are a little tentative on the whole potty training thing.

Awesome trip Jim. No doubt your daughter (and yourself) will benefit from the time you share on trips likes this. So, any snow camping plans

Thanks. She's really a sweet kid for the most part (she can be a bit of a pain when she's tired, but then so can I).

Thanks. I don't normally consider myself much of a photographer, so I particularly appreciate that. My little point and shoot does a pretty good job some times. Of course the real secret is to get out often and shoot frequently. Shoot enough photos, and even an amatuer like me is bound to get one right. :)

My basic approach to my photos is to take photos at critical junctures and representative points along the trail. I try to then re-construct the trip in my TR.

Of the three (hiking, writing, and photography), I need to improve the most in my hiking. For a guy who's actually fairly serious about getting out there and hiking, I'm really really slow. Now that I'm out of work, I'm hiking 3 or 4 times per week, and my speed is up a little bit, but I'm still painfully slow. It's frustrating to say the least.

P.S. I'm having fun with long exposures.
8 seconds is pretty good:

60 seconds is too much:

And by comparison, in daylight:

Jim,

Being in the defense industry, my job is hanging by a thread likely.

But if I were to get the pink slip I think I would go right into hiking more with some rounds of volunteering thrown in.

I've been out of work before and you need something positive and fulfilling to work towards.

If you ever get the question in an interview: ``What did you do with your time?"

Nothing sounds more shallow then, ``Well, I watched a lot of TV and played a lot of online video games."

That's been my sense, and it really has helped. I've really gotten down some days, but a good hike typically snaps me out of it.

Ha! Maybe for me, but it's enough weight for me to carry three season gear for me and my daughter.
