Hal, I've done my share of searching for info as well, as i nothing is more exciting that finding that "treasure" out in the hills. I soon realized that the details of these crashes is pretty well guarded, especially on the internet. Even, the publications by the famous wreck hunters only give vague descriptions and rarely any specific coordinates. Its understandable though, seeing that quite a few of these sites are also memorials to pilots who perished and if well known may soon be overrun with souvenir hunters. That said, I'd still LOVE to find an obscure wreck sometime..

many older & newer aircraft simply don't have the performance to just 'climb on up' quickly as one might think.
Many of the sites I've visited show they almost cleared the ridge,
petal to the metal/mach-chicken giving it the best shot only to end up splattering in the trees.

But in the case of the airplane on the flanks of San G that plane crashed on the north side not the south side it was coming down not going up from what I read, I'll try to find that article again.

my wreck bucket list - local stuff only

Postby Pitownpi » Wed Oct 03, 2012 7:38 am

I only became aware of wreck finding by stumbling upon pieces of a wreck.
Now, I always keeping an eye out for something different to see and find on hikes, most peaks are boring the 10th time!
Some wreck hunters contacted me to get some help looking for certain never-seen-since stuff.
I've been on some wild goose chasing too.

I have to say the wreck-finders who make it a family event really have some fun.
Camping and hiking, looking for stuff! The one wreck-hunter family I've gotten to know is on
their 3rd generation of wreck finding. It's a career that can be passed down!

What a blast to see every member of the family involved!

10/2/44 BT-13B

3/5/45 USN Vought F4U

3/4/46 Kitching Peak Light Plane

8/22/50 North American F-86A

12/?/52 Sikorsky Helicopter near Mine Shaft Flat crashed during rescue of C-47B (Found leading edge of blades)

1/26/56 North American TB-25J (Found after 2 attempts)

?? Douglas Skyraider USN Holcomb Valley/John Bull Flat (have ridden my motorcycle back there, very challenging riding)

3/2/57 Cessna 170 N1391D

1/18/57 Piper TriPacer NC883A (coordinates given place it on nose of 3 sisters peak, but Sawtooth fire obliterated it?) ATTEMPT SOON!

10/17/69 Cessna Skymaster N1234V Kitching Peak

2/21/71 Cessna 172 N6625R

5/7/71 Mooney Mk. 20EN1385W

7/17/80 Boeing-Vertol CH-47 (my father flew these!)

8/7/86 Cessna 150 N95370 Mission Creek

8/24/89 Rockwell International OV-10A USMC (Looked for this 3 times in Middle Fork Whitewater)

PM me if you are into any of it.....
Thanks and Kindest Regards,
Pi

I've been to the C-47 site on Gorgonio several times and it never gets old. If the BT-13B crashed 9 miles SW of palm springs, it would be east of Tahquitz, maybe near Andreas Canyon. Any idea of the elevation of the wreck? Maybe it's not too far off the PCT, but far enough not to be disturbed.
