Water Running?

Postby rdarius » Mon Aug 27, 2012 11:38 am

Starting Thursday, August 30, I am backpacking from the PS Tram to Tahquitz Valley to Strawberry Junction to Little Round Valley, and then back to the Tram. Does anyone know where the best water resources are at this late date in a dry season? Strawberry Junction and Little Round Valley would be the best based on our route. Any information is good, however. Thanks!

Assuming that your route is something like what I've plotted on this map, then there will probably be water at
"D" -- near Laws Camp
"E" -- which is a little creek flowing down the side of the hill just north of the trail. I think this is called "Connie's Creek"
"F" -- which is a spring south and east of the four way junction near Skunk Cabbage Meadow. It's closest to the trail going south to Tahquitz Meadow. This spring is recessed into the ground, so it can be a little hard to find, but it's reliable even in fairly dry conditions and is worth looking for.
"I" may have some water but probably VERY low flow.
"K" may have some water
"L" may have some water
"M" is the spot where the trail crosses the drainage just before reaching LRV. There should be water here. This is the best spot from which to gather water in LRV.
"N" (the meadow) may have some water
"Q" (the spigot at the trail junction) should have water.

Hope that helps.

Hikin_Jim - Good map for water this time of year. I believe that the name of your location E is Candy's Creek, named after a gal who use to work with the Forest Service taking care of their horses back in the days when the Forest Service had horses up in the Idyllwild area. Other Forest Service employees put up a sign with this name. The Forest Service kept taking the sign down since it was not official, but her friends kept putting it back up.

That sounds right, Nick. I couldn't remember the name exactly, and I couldn't find all my photos.
