Anybody going Saturday, 8/25?

General Palm Springs area.

Postby Hikin_Jim » Fri Aug 24, 2007 7:50 pm

OK, guys, I'm not going to make it. It would be tremendously fun, but I just got off the phone with Michiko, and she wants me to meet with a couple of friends who are in town tomorrow afternoon, and I can't get back over to her area in time if I do Baldy. Maybe it's best since I was all excitied about the hike (and getting a chance to hike with you guys) rather than objectively evaluating my physical condition; I'm a little sick still and probably shouldn't do Bear Canyon until another week or so. I'm going to have to be content with a lesser trail over here.

HAVE A GREAT HIKE TOMORROW MORNING!

Jim

I started at Manker Flats a few minutes before 5:00a. Made it to Baldy at 8:10 via the ski hut trail (it was slow going early on in the dark). No one else on the summit (I love that feeling!). Yo-Yo'ed over to West Baldy and back at 8:40. Then all sorts of people started piling up onto the summit. Some lady followed me up from the Bear Canyon trail as I was returning from West Baldy - I think she was Korean and she had on the full head cap that covered everything but her eyes (seems like that would be awfully warm). Left summit at about 9:30 and returned via the ski hut trail (damn that's steep) to my car at 11:30. I passed what seemed like at least 5,000 people on my way down that were mostly heading to the summit. Really slows you down when you yield the right of way to that many people (and their dogs)! Sorry I missed meeting those taking the Bear Canyon trail. Sorry Z , I only saw normal birds.

Anyone going Saturday 8/25

Postby Cy Kaicener » Sun Aug 26, 2007 4:02 am

Ellen and I started from Baldy Village at 5.40 am after leaving a car up at Manker Flats to ease the journey back. It took us four and three quarter hours to reach the summit which is 5800 ft elevation gain. We met up with the Mt Whitney.info message board group who were doing the three T's as well as running the whole ridge. After noon there were spectacular thunder clouds building up from the West. It was a treat to hike with Ellen, and Laura who had both returned from climbing 14000 ft peaks in Colorado and the High Sierra.

Howdy All :D
No worries Jim, I look forward to meeting/hiking with you in the future.

Hiking with Cy sure makes the time pass pleasantly. He set a perfect pace going up through the first section with the manzanita and buckthorn. Thank God we did the car shuttle so we could come down Devil's backbone.

As Cy noted, Laura, GigaMike, and a fellow Riversider (can't remember his name -- brain cramp) also went up Bear Canyon. I hiked with them for a while, whcih was very pleasant. I felt much better about the trail kicking my butt when Laura said she also couldn't believe how hard Bear Canyon felt. She had just come back from a HUGE solo Sierra trek (High Sierra Trail and JMT).

I found out that Laura has a fabulous sense of humor and look forward to hiking with her in the future. Their group did the three T's and and descended via Icehouse. Glad I had no intentions in that direction -- I would have truly been a "Dead Blond Hiking" :P

Don't know what I'll be doing next weekend. After how hot Bear Canyon was (even with a 5:40 start) and how wasted I felt, Skyline would be a brutal way to "celebrate" my birthday next Saturday.

OK HikeUp -- now I'm really curious about the lavender bird nickname  What's the story behind it?

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

Lavender bird

Howdy HikeUp :D

Don't worry about posting the story -- I found it at the San Gorgonio Wilderness Association BB.

When someone figures out what this bird is, please let me know 8)

I saw the most beautiful scrub jay I've ever seen on the Mt. Whitney trail. It was so blue, it looked like a Walt Disney creation.

Good lord, not ANOTHER message board!

Ellen and Cy, it was so good to see you two out there this weekend. You are both an inspiration! And Ellen, this is for you:

The Platter Upon Which My A$$ Was Served

I'm still trying to figure out why I felt so poop-ish Saturday morning. Maybe it's just my bod telling me to take a break, already!!! Maybe it's just the next plateau that I need to get past. Maybe I need to stop being so dern competitive! :o

Ellen, if you are thinking about C2C next weekend, I might consider it as well. It's supposed to get really hot again this week. But it might also be a good excuse to go and finish off Cornell. Hmmm...

Besides, I need the platter to serve up my next adventure, not my buttocks!
