Anybody going Saturday, 8/25?

General Palm Springs area.

Howdy Cy,

Meeting at Manker and leaving a car sounds good 8) What time should I meet you up there? My joints will sure like the trip down Devil's backbone (or even the Baldy Bowl) better than going back Bear Canyon.

Bear Canyon sounds like a pretty good hike for this Saturday. Here's the weather report, according to the NWS/NOAA: http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/forecast/MapClick.php?site=lox&smap=1&textField1=34.23611&textField2=-117.65917.

What time do you think you'd be back to the Bear Canyon TH?

Ellen - 5.15 am is better. I just remembered that I told someone else that I would be at the Ranger station at 5.00 am.

Whoa. I'm confused now. Are you meeting at 5:00 AM at the Ranger Station and then at 5:15 AM at Manker Flats? Is that correct? And then returning to the Ranger Station to start the hike? Probably arriving back at the Ranger Station at 5:30 AM or ? Where and when are you starting the hike? To get to the Ranger Station by 5:00 AM, I need to leave at 3:45 AM, so if you're going to be there at 5:30 AM, that would be important for me to know.

I've been fighting a cold since I got back from Japan on the 13th. I'm not sure I'm up for such a big hike although exiting via Baldy Notch would take away some of the strain. I suppose I could park at the Ranger Station and then abort and head back on my own if I couldn't hack it. Ellen, I already know that you're faster than I am, just based on your post hike descriptions.

Let me know where you're starting the hike from and at what time. I'm 75% thinking I'll meet you. When I find out what time you're meeting and where, I'll figure out the remaining 25%.

PS How much water are you thinking of bringing? 4 liters? 5L? 6L? I'm sort of thinking of 5L.

Jim - I am stopping at the ranger station at 5 am to see if there is anyone else taking their car up to Manker Flats near the locked gate. I will meet Ellen there at 5.15 am and leave one of the cars up there. We will start the hike from the Ranger station at 5.30 am approx. See you there. We could have six people if everyone is there on time. :)
I am bringing three litres.

Howdy Jim :D

I'll be meeting Cy at Manker flats at around 5:15 to leave a car. I believe he's meeting someone at the RS at 5 AM to caravan up to Manker flats. Then, we'll come down in one car which would likely place us at the Bear Canyon trailhead at 5:30.

From what Cy says, it sounds like there will be ample people on the Bear Canyon trail of various speeds for us to hike with. After two 14ners in two consecutive weekends, my legs aren't feeling that spy

I think 4 to 5 liters sounds like a good idea. I'll be carrying 3 liters and will likely drink a liter before leaving the car.

Too bad there's no beer at the summit

By coincidence, I'll be starting at Manker to go up the ski hut trail somewhere between 5:00 and 5:30a. I'll maybe see you guys on the summit around 8 to 8:30. I'll return via ski hut or over to the notch and down the ski lift (saves wear and tear on the knees doesn't it!?).

I'll be in a white t-shirt and tan shorts and a dark blue cap. Be safe!
