Mt. San Jacinto State Park -- CLOSED?

Postby Hikin_Jim » Thu Aug 23, 2007 8:11 am

The Press Enterprise reports that Mt. San Jacinto State Park is CLOSED due to the Snow Creek Fire. http://www.pe.com/localnews/rivcounty/stories/PE_News_Local_C_fire23.3c8a2a9.html

I assume the tram would be closed too. Anyone know more on this?

The scrolling marquee on the tram's website reads:

"The backcountry is closed due to extreme fire danger. The Tramway and Long Valley trails are open."

Mount San Jacinto State Wilderness has temporarily closed due to danger from a wild fire near our boundary. Closure is effective 8-22-07.

A ranger just called me to tell me the wilderness is closed. I had permits for a four-day backpacking trip up there. He said the area is not in any real danger, but they just don't want people up there that they may have to evacuate later.
I'm pretty bummed out. This was going to be my first backpacking trip. :(

Since Long Valley and the tram aren't closed, I'd say Skyline is "good to go." You could always check with the ranger station who could give you the official word.

Bummer dude. Hey, cruise on over to the San G wilderness. If you've already got the time off, take advantage of it. I've done some recent backpacks there and have some ideas if that would help in the planning. Permits might be an issue, but some trail camps are not heavily used like Alger, Saxton, and Plummer. There are options.

Thanks for the advice about SG. I read up about the area this morning after I got the news from the ranger. Unfortunately I don't have the proper gear to deal with the bears over there. I'm just hoping I'll get some good news tomorrow so I can get up on SJ. Otherwise I think I'll just go to work and save my last two vacation days of the year.
