Tahquitz Loop

Howdy All :)

The San Jacinto hiking club hiked from the tram to Tahquitz yesterday. We split into groups based on pace and how far folks wanted to go. My group went up Wellman's, down to Saddle Junction and over to Tahquitz peak where we had lunch. We then dropped into Tahquitz valley and took the trail to Laws Camp (past lovely Reeds Meadow). This was my first time on the trail that passes by Reeds -- definately worth a repeat 8) Hiked up to Hidden Divide from Laws and enjoyed an AB beer at the tram bar.

It was very gusty going up the Tahquitz fire lookout -- we were getting knocked around quite a bit. About mid-way up, two shirtless guys were coming down. Fight On! would have had a blast taking their picture  Let's just say no one will be calling either fellow to model  The worst wind gusts were at the corner where the stairs connect to the platform -- actually had to hold on for dear life.

Looked over at the PCT crossing by Red Tahquitz -- the PCT is calling. Will have to answer soon 8)

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

I did the same hike, minus the side trip to the fire lookout, today. The ferns are nice. I like eating them as i hike along.

I hope you got a squirrel card while you were up on Tahquitz Peak.

I never got one of those! But maybe that's because I was so busy obsessing with the little glass saucers they had under all the furniture, apparently to prevent themselves from getting electrocuted. Does anyone know if they still have those?

There were still glass insulators on the stool last time i was at Tahquitz peak a couple years ago. I always wondered about the effectiveness. Lightning strikes hundreds/thousands of feet between earth and cloud. Is 1/4" of glass really gonna stop it?

"Standard issue in the towers was a chair designed to protect against electrocution. Glass insulators are attached to the base of the wooden chairs' legs. "A friend of mine claims you can get five people standing on that chair during a storm,"

Well,at least the monkeys willing to count on it.
