Has anyone here done this hike in one day? If so, I'm very interested to hear any trip reports, advice, recommendations, etc. Thanks!

I think it is late in the year for it. The exit route is the trail from the summit to Mahogany Flats, and it is a long car shuttle. It is a one day hike, but definitely not a one day trip.

Or, if you want ancient history, check out Gordon MacLeod's May 1965 writeup in the Trip Reports archive of the Desert Peaks Section of the Sierra Club. I believe Gordon is still hiking.

http://angeles.sierraclub.org/dps/archi ... 0001.htm#T

I did the climb in the spring of 1977. I remember the dirt road up to the springs as being relatively well-surfaced and well-graded, easy to follow in the dark. The water in the spring looked great, but we did not drink it, because it is burro country. Above the spring there was not only no trail, there was no trace of human passage, no footprints, no litter. I remember it as good cross-country hiking, sometimes steep but with good footing, and without the obstacle course of brush and boulders so common in Southern California. Obviously, the vegetation may have changed. We saw nobody, from the beginning at Shorty's Well to the end at Mahogany Flats.

Doing it in two days from LA, the driving was a killer, due to the shuttle. Better to treat yourself to a night at a motel or lodge after the hike, and drive back the next day.

I did a few hikes with Gordon McLeod's group. He was hard to keep up with even in my younger days. :) I was not advised to do the Badwater to Telescope hike until I did Skyline first. I dont think there was a tram at that time. I went with Sid Davis and finished going out at Humber Park.

Cy,

It was the other way around with me. I did not do the Skyline until October of 2010. Since I was 69, you were my inspiration. I did not know Sid Davis, but friends of mine who did said Sid had quite a repertoire of jokes. A few of which they retailed second-hand. I won't repeat them here.

I too am intrested in this hike. I did a lttle searching and obviously it is best to do in this in the spring and fall due to the high snow on top and high heat on the bottom. It is also all off trail once you start the climbing unlike C2C. There is a dirt road to the base and then up cross country. Not too mention bring a lot of water. And the logistics are a nightmare. Best to stay over nigth at Maghony. I did the Peak last month and man what a view!
