Wow! Just found this site and forum, very cool.
Did my first ascent of Snow Creek last spring (April? 2011) in excellent neve snow conditions with a bit of postholing on the final 1000'. Left Santa Barbara at 3:00 am, and began hiking at 6:00. Even after studying the map extensively, I cut across the isthmus too early and accidentally stepped on DWA property. Moments later, a helicopter buzzed me about 20' overhead. Got some neat pics of that. They were probably alerted by the presence of my lonely vehicle parked way out on the road. Around 12:00, at the base of the snow chute, I heard some voices. Strapping on their crampons were two vibrant characters - Fern and Steve. They were delighted to chat and entertain me for the remainder of the day. If I remember correctly, they said that it was their 10th ascent of the North Face. They both seemed surprised to see that no one was behind me, and that I was attempting a solo ascent. They said they had started at 4:00am and slept for an hour or so around the 5,000' level. After why seemed like hours of slogging up the snow chute, we caught up to another party (Paul and ??) who were on day 2 of their ascent! We all took turns breaking trail at this point, and the 5 of us summited at 6:00pm, 12 hours after I left the car. The hike down to the tram was much longer than I had expected, but at least it was all downhill at that point. After a victory beer at the tram, and hitching a ride back to the car, it was almost over. 15 hours car-to-car, and a total 21 hour push driving back to Santa Barbara. A truly epic outing in the mountains; one I'll never forget. I slept for 20 hours the following day, broken and exhausted.
Thanks for the cytomax powder, Fern. My legs were nearly seized towards the top. Did I mention that I drank 10 liters of water that day? I was really overdressed and HOT, expecting cooler conditions.
