Black Mtn Road - Fuller Ridge to Summit

Postby allthink » Tue May 08, 2012 11:23 am

All,

I have been reading this board on/off for a year now. I'd like to say thank you for the tips, details, and helpful information. Good group here :)

My question: I went up to Black Mtn Road this past weekend and it was closed. I would like to hike Fuller Ridge to summit this weekend and a ranger said they might be opening the road. I hope so as I am not ready for Marion Mtn yet. If closed, I will try Deer Springs Trail.

What is the policy on hiking with dogs. I hiked Fuller Ridge last year and saw two hikers with dogs up at Round Valley.

Hope to meet some of you on the trail soon.

Upon checking with the ranger station in Idyllwild, it appears that Black Mountain Rd will not open until May 25, when the campground with the same name will open.

An alternate to getting to Fuller Ridge is taking the Black Mountain Trail from Hwy 243 and connecting with the dirt road just below the summit of Black Mtn, then following that to the traillhead. We did this route last Saturday; even though it's only 6.5 mi, the first 4 mi or so gain quite a bit of elevation.

It'd still make for a pretty long day if going for the summit though.

By the way, we are passing through the area again tomorrow, coming from Snow Creek and on to the summit, then down to the tram.
