The low is showing 60, (not 70, at least on the NOAA site) so hopefully it will be cool early on. I know Ellen will appreciate that!

Howdy MASTER Z-dude :)

Congratulations 8) Looking forward to seeing you fly by on a trail soon 8) Regarding temperature -- I sure hope it drops below 70 but I'm erring on the side of caution.

I'm hoping for a sighting of the Dynamic Duo 8)

Howdy Sugar Mike :)

Hope to meet you -- will be looking for the cool guy in the fake cowboy hat 8)

Howdy All :)

Started at 4:50 AM from the museum trail head -- too late to enjoy the moon. Saw headlamps above me and caught up with a nice group of folks at the picnic tables. I met Mike and friends at the Ramon trail junction. I met William at 4 K and we stayed together to Flatrock -- he and friends were bound for the summit. My friend Karin and her son Adam were also out -- this was his first Skyline 8)

There were hikers sprinkled all the way up to Flatrock -- just enough folks to stay motivated and have company -- but not so many that the trail felt cramped. It was humid and a relief to reach the cool shade of the traverse. St. Florian arrived and we celebrated the hike with anesthetic beverages. He kindly gave Karin, Adam and I a ride back to our vehicles. I enjoyed a lovely recovery meal at Las Casuelas with Karin and Adam before heading home.

Heading to the north side of San Gorgonio tomorrow with Lance.

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

How were the conditions/trail report from the 5th?

Postby Jason_ak » Sun May 06, 2012 7:05 am

I plan on hiking C2C2C on the 8th and was wondering what conditions were encountered on the way up. Was there any ice or snow to worry about needing microspikes ect..? I want to stay light and not carry any uneeded gear. Thank you.

Just got back to San Diego from my FIRST palm springs trip! I definitely enjoyed it. We started the hike a little after 4:30 and had breakfast at the tables and saw Ellen trekking up. She gave us some good advice. We made it to the tables in 32 minutes. Of my group of seven, one wasn't ready for the hike. The other five charged ahead and I took a slow trek up with him. Unfortunately, I ended up carrying two backpacks of water and didnt get to the tram until ten hours after we started. Three from my group made good time and ended up hitting the summit. Without trekking poles and carrying two packs of water, I have to admit I was a little worn out! To me, It was a little harder than Half Dome, even when not going all the way to the summit. Kind of like a continual stair master for hours and hours.

With the timing and none of the other three from my group wanting to take a crack at the summit, I decided to put it off for the next time. It was still an amazing trip and I cannot wait to do it again, possibly in the fall. Thank you all for the good advice along the way.

We started at 1am from the museum. Moon was bright enough that we didn't need to use any lights before 4am when it disappeared behind the mountains. We didn't push real hard and enjoyed the night. It was close to 70 when we left the parking lot but by the time we got to Flat Rock it was COLD. Had an amazing breakfast watching the sun rise and then headed up to the Tram. We did plan on going to the summit but one of our group was done. Oh well, a cold one sounded good to me. Met a couple on the patio that were heading back into town and got a ride. There was a rescue going on when we got to the parking lot. It was 90+ and people were still heading up the trail!

We really enjoyed the night and didn't push real hard. Probably the best trip I've made up Skyline. 6.5 hours hiking with 2.5 hours relaxing at different points along the way. Well give it another go in the fall.

Howdy Jason :)

It was nice to meet you 8) You are a saint for being your friend's Sherpa -- your assistance probably prevented a rescue. Looking forward to seeing you on the trail.
