Donnie - New Guy

Postby magikwalt » Thu Jul 12, 2007 3:43 pm

Hello !!
My name is Donnie and I am from Palm Desert and recently found this forum from an ad on Craigslist. Looks like a great idea for members to meet atop the Tram. I have a tram pass and if nothing comes up at work I think I would be interested in joining you. Is anyone hiking before the BBQ ?

Hey Donnie, welcome a-board! I saw some silly ad for meeting fitness partners, you know those sites that trick people into thinking it's free, but then you gotta pay to contact someone (like roommates.com etc). Some things in life should be free! That's quite a slide show you got!

Welcome aboard Donnie. Are you the same Donnie that is hiking up c2c this Sunday (3 am) with the Outdoorsclub.? This Saturday I will be hiking part way down the Skyline trail after taking the first tram up.

Hi Cy,
Yes Cy, that is me, Donnie Wilhelm. I lead several hikes and mtn bike rides with the Outdoorsclub.org - Right now my goal is to get into better shape for longer distance hikes.

Hi, Donnie. What time are you guys going to start? It may be fairly hot this Saturday. The NWS is currently predicting http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/forecast/MapCli ... -116.54444.

I hope I'm not sounding too worry wart here, but it's not uncommon for people to get into trouble on Skyline, and heat injuries can be quite serious. Better perhaps to discuss preparation on this forum in advance rather than encounter problems on the route where you don't have a lot of options!

Cy's done that route a gazillion times, I'm sure he'd be a good person to bounce some ideas off of.

Aargh! No matter how I try to escape, I keep running into people who want to go up Skyline for the first time in July!!!

Donnie: please do not be offended, but reread all the posts we have written in which we strongly suggest people (no matter how fit) not attempt C2C for their first time in the summer months. I recently created a post on this subject. It really is a dangerous thing to do. Leading a large group is even worse.

MagikWalt: I am so sorry, but I can't make the barbecue this Saturday! I am going to be leaving town earlier than I had thought (will be in Sierras for a week.) I will be having my get-together in late September or Early October, so hopefully I can meet you all then ....

Hi Cynthia and Jim,
Thank you both for your concerns. I appreciate your thoughts. Cynthis, this is not my first time doing C2C in the heat. I hike C2T repeatedly throughout the year because it is an incredible conditioning hike that is convenient and close to home. And the best part is I dont have to do much downhiking. I have more concerns about this trail when I hike it in Winter with ice.
Cheers, Donnie

Hi Donnie. What time are you starting? What time do you plan on getting to Long Valley? Maybe I'll see you along the way.

Incidentally, you've probably seen my postings about my Misty Mate that I use to stay cool. How do you handle the heat? Any special strategies?

Phew! OK, glad to hear we don't have another SAR incident waiting to happen. Hope everyone on the hike is strong and you have a good hike.

If you hear a sonic boom en route, that would be Zippety Dude passing by. :D

Donnie - New Guy

Postby Cy Kaicener » Thu Jul 12, 2007 6:04 pm

Hey Donnie - I just read that Scott Swaney has posted a trip for the ODC on July 21 to White Mountain from the sage just north of Bishop on Hwy 6 at 4300 ft to the summit at 14,250 ft. He is the guy that did c2c twice in two days. :)

Walt, that was cool arranging all the messages in this one folder. Sorry about jacking the BBQ folder.

Hey Zippididude, Only thing I do for heat is keep my heartrate low. Want to see the Mistymate or whatever you call it. We are going up c2c at 3 am on Sunday and should be at long valley at 8:30-9:00. I wear Orange, I'll hear you coming and stand aside...

Cy, on Saturday I am going to stash some extra water for the C2C ODC hike at the 7000' level...just in case any of us run low.

Postby donnie » Mon Aug 13, 2007 7:26 pm

Heading up to the high country by Rock Creek with my ice axe and crampons to climb Mt Abbot on August 24 and 25, one night camping. Anyone been here lately or have some thoughts?

Hey Donnie, probably Mt-Whitney.info and Summitpost will get you a few responses. The Sierras had a below-average snow year. That's all I know.
