Easiest Trail for one

Postby deaton » Fri Feb 03, 2012 7:42 pm

I NEED to get to the mountains soon. I was thinking a wknd trip to San Jacinto as it's closer to me than Mammoth.

I'm sure it's someplace on the web...but I don't have time to search all night...

WHAT is the best trail to hike partways up the MT? I heard that Devil's Slide is not too bad?

I'm very experienced but I'm recovering from an injury so I'd prefer hiking/snowshoeing...only.

Thanks in advance!

I suggest you take the tram, that way you have a lot of options of connecting various trails.

I could take the tram....but it seems like it might not be there when I get back...I'd rather hike in from a trailhead and be responsible for my own safety.

Devils Slide is a great way to get into the high country. I have heard that most of the ice on the trail that was present last month has melted. Keep an eye on the weather. That trail can get very icy when there is snow present. Deer Springs trail is great too. It starts at a lower elevation (5500) than Devils Slide, and because of the southern exposure it doesn't get as much snow/ice as Devils Slide. Better choice in the winter, spring, fall IMO.

Were's your 'hobbit home' located? Might be easier to find something nearer home if you're wanting to go out on a short hike after a layoff from injury. As you suggested, no reason to get stuck on the slopes of Mt. Mordor if all you want to do is get out for a short, easy dayhike and see how you feel.

Revising my earlier post. Just came down Devils Slide and there is still quite a bit of ice approaching Saddle Junction. I made it to the junction in trail runners, but I think if I were carrying a backpack I would want micro spikes.

The windstorm thing was a very unusual case. I'll ridden the tram hundreds of times without being let down once.
