Dont' get me wrong, I take my kids on lots of hikes (kicking and screaming, sometimes, but still.) But the bottom line is you need to be much more prepared than on a regular hike, including being prepared for the possibility of carrying the kid! (otherwise, you could end up like the people who had to heli their dog out.) And I certainly wouldn't take any kid far up on a rugged, remote trail I had not previously explored. The guy was foolish and irresponsible.
