Ignore High Wind Warning this weekend

Postby TramWeatherCenter » Fri Jan 27, 2012 9:36 am

If you are heading up to the Tramway, ignore the High Wind Warning set in place by the National Weather Service San Diego.

This High Wind Warning should not included the area. This is an offshore Santa Ana Wind Event and winds of high wind measure do not travel uphill from the northeast ... they lose momentum and slow down.

The winds will blast on the WEST side of the San Jacinto Mtn as they sink down, including anyone driving through the Banning Pass.

The Mountain and Valley Station will both be breezy and nice day, with passing high clouds, thick at times due to an upper level disturbance missing us to the east, which is creating these winds.

So again, ignore that warning. I currently have no warnings at PSAT Weather ... No large storm systems or major wind events are in the area or scope at the time ...

Have a good weekend ...

It's the direction. PSAT and Long Valley lie on the Eastern side of the peak elevation of the Riverside County Mountains. Wind coming from the east will be forced to go uphill and since there isn't much warm air, the air will not rise. This will cause a "dam break" effect where winds Idy are stronger because it lies on the West side of the mountains which means down-sloping winds. ...

PSAT and Long Valley are on the east side, and the winds will be much calmer.

The only time strong gusts that warrant a High Wind Warning are with winds coming in from the northwest, west, or southwest ... due to the area being on the east side, wind rolling down Mt. San Jacinto.

This station should not register strong gusts through today, tonight, or the weekend due to the dam break. Perfect hiking weather this weekend -

4 mph with 6 mph gusts ... down in the banning pass it is worse, but trends will continue to make for calm conditions for hikers in the PSAT area.

Either way, take a pillow with you just in case you need to bunk in Mule Shed Chalet...

Someone could seize on a major hospitality industry business opportunity by opening the "Old Corral Shed Sheraton" up there.

So far the reviews haven't been that good.

This turned out to be exactly on the mark. We were up in the area around Harvard and Yale Peaks today, and there was no more than a light breeze.
