Desert Hiking

Postby lesper4 » Tue Jan 03, 2012 11:57 am

So I am going to be in the Desert this Friday and Saturday with not a whole lot to do. I plan on riding my bike up Hwy 74 to some point and then back down on Friday morning thinking there will be less traffic on a weekday. I was hoping on doing some sort of hike on Saturday. I did Murry Hill early this year and was wondering what else would be fun in the area...maybe Haystack Mountain? Any other suggestions, i kind of like the idea of finishing up high so I have a view.
Thanks

Hi lesper,

If you like that area you might enjoy a through-hike from the Art Smith trail through to Palm Springs. I have some photos and maps here from a couple of years ago ..

There are various exit options once you get to the Palm Canyon area. It's a beautiful area this time of year.

It occurs to me the bighorn closures are probable in effect right now. I'll leave that up to you to decide. I'm not interested in starting a debate here.

Thanks for the link to the pictures. I have ridden the area on my bike and absolutly love it but i think anything over 12 miles may be pushing it if I get any of my friends to go with me. If it is just me my wife will have the car so I may want to start something closer to home base. I am staying at the Royal Sun Inn (cheapo)

I found this link http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/fo/palmspri ... eadsb.html
but I am not familur with some of the trails although I have heard the names on this forum from time to time.

If you're looking for a peak, maybe the scramble to Asbestos off Hwy 74:

If you are looking for something strenuous the Sierra Club is doing Rosa Pt in Anza Borego this Saturday. (I might do Mt Baldy)
