Results of the storm?

Postby zippetydude » Tue Dec 13, 2011 11:40 am

I can't see San J all that well from where I live, but the storm was way weaker than predicted as far as I can see. Is there much new snow, or just a little? I'm trying to figure if Skyline, etc. are socked in right now, cause I got an extra day off this weekend... Any guess on the elevation where the snow begins to get too deep to navigate without snowshoes?

Howdy Z :)

Heading up the tram tomorrow -- I'll take a look down from Grubbs Notch.

Looking up from Palm Springs the snow level was round 4500' or 5000'.

I think I'd split the difference with Florian and argue for 5500. But it looks 'dusty' or thin. It looks pretty thick after 6k. I think I heard 10 to ll inches but that's just the local TV station, don't know if it's true.

Howdy All :)

I'll post a report on conditions when I get home tomorrow. We're snowshoeing from the tram to the peak. Since the first tram doesn't go up until 10 AM and I'm driving back to Riverside afterwards, it will likely be a late evening post.

My feet get chilly coming out of the car! I'm wondering if it's that dry, soft unconsolidated stuff Ellen had mentioned on San G. If so, I'm hoping you and Fern will go up and pack it down a couple times before us wimpy weekend warriors go give it a shot. Whatcha doin' Friday morning? I'll text you.

Howdy Z :)

I don't think you'll have any significant snow until the traverse. Based on what we had today, I'm estimating about five inches of new powder. Snowshoes would be great to lay down a nice, wide trail for the rest of us (hint, hint)

If I do Skyline this weekend, I'll bring microspikes and poles.
