11/11/11 Skyline to Tram, Ice?

Postby traildude » Thu Nov 10, 2011 12:56 am

Hi,

I'm planning on hiking the skyline trail from the museum to the tram with my wife, this veterans day.

We haven't hiked this route before, but we're prepared for the elevation, and plan to get an early start.

My question is, is there any ice on the upper part of this trek? Anything requiring an axe, etc.?

The tram's website says there's only 3 inches of snow at that level, and its only November, so I don't imagine its an issue yet. Any thoughts?

There is ice from around 7000' up.

...and that is a steep section.

Thanks,

is it thick up there? I mean like enough to require the extra equipment?

Excellent day for a hike yesterday. It started out overcast and a bit drizzle, but turned into a nice sunny day.

Above 7300 the trail was covered in snow, but worn in with bootprints. It wasn't that icy, more slushy and slippery. Poles at this part were key and we took it very slowly.

What a fun hike! My wife and I can't wait to do it again!
