These were actual tents -- a group of them -- off the beaten path between Tamarack and Round valley. There was a tarp shelter as well. It was eerie to run into them.

There are still tents standing from the 1930's? Or are there just some frames with shards of cloth still hanging from them?

Jim- hiking into the CCC camp felt a little like something out of Deliverance. I saw a big green snow covered dome tent. No footprints in the snow; nobody home. First thought was it belonged to Ted Kyzynski or his camo-outfitted cousin. Next we spy empty snow-covered Marmot done tent, followed by a couple more green tents plus a tarp. All empty. Behind the tents was some kind of work area. Cannibals drying flesh-leather? We did not want to investigate. Rather, we hoofed on by and let our imaginations run rampant. I was truly thinking it all belonged to some hippy family hiding off the grid.

How did you identify it as a CCC camp? It doesn't sound like CCC stuff. CCC stuff would be wood frames with canvas if you're talking about the original CCC which was active during the Great Depression in the 1930's.

Kinda weird though to run across a camp in the middle of the woods, particularly in a spot where camping isn't allowed (it sounds like). Any signs of recent use?

HJ, the camp is for the crews that have been doing work on the mountain this past summer.

OK, now that makes sense. Didn't think it was a CCC camp from the 30's.

We ran into a live CCC camp this summer on the PCT. The crew mostly looked like high schoolers. JFR has pix of their tent city in his [aka Fuller Ridge] SJ 2011 trip report:

CCC or YCC? (some of them do look pretty young).

I have to not look at JFR's photos. They always make me want to get out there.

Here's some info on the CCC on San Jacinto.

For those thinking of joining a crew; here's their motto: "Hard Work, Low Pay, Miserable Conditions...and More!"

Heh. I'll take that as a compliment! :) And maybe you should look at them more often!

During the summer there was a CCC Camp right where the "Deer Springs Camp" is shown on the Acme Map, nestled in the cleft just below the PCT. It looked like the individual workers had their own small tents (they were dotted all around) while the cooking and group functions happened under the larger tarps. They even had a black water hose running uphill, intersecting the stream somewhere above the trail crossing; in other words, they had fresh running water in their camp! Anyway, they did a lot of good work all along the Fuller Ridge Trail.

Yes, it's a bit of a back handed compliment.

It looked like a *really* nice trip. 3 nights at LRV?
