Am I the only one who didn't do Skyline today?

Between 10 and 12, I was hanging out near Grubbs Notch and estimated about 70 went by on the Skyline/C2C.

That is amazing. Right now at 3.35 pm its 98 degrees in Palm Springs. Anyone that didnt get a very early start should encounter very warm conditions.

Yes, quite the day...solitude was NOT the word of the day.

I started at 4:45 to try and beat the 5:00am groups. Apparently lots of peeps started very early! Must have passed 50 people.

I could not help myself when one woman asked me, "are you hiking alone?" My reply, "I don't think it is possible to be alone on Skyline on a Saturday..."

But, not even the crowd could diminish the beauty of sunrise on Skyline, kind of like Easter Sunrise Services, a community event...lol.

Howdy All

Craig and I started about 5:10. Although the weather forecast predicted a low in the 60's, it was at least five degrees warmer. As Robin noted, we encountered lots of folks on the trail. I love watching the headlmaps snaking up the trail ahead -- the Skyline Conga line (credit to HHB) It was motivating for Craig and I to reel in folks ahead of us. Apparently there were multiple groups -- Sierra Club, a San Diego meetup group, and Kathryn's San Jacinto meetup group.

Speedy Steve passed us above Shade Rock -- I don't think his feet even touched the ground We were heading up the 5 K ridge when Z-dude (great to see you Z!), InFerno and Caesar flew by. We took a short fuel break at Flatrock, then started sweating our way up through the manzanita. Each week Craig is getting stronger and faster while I'm still slow twitching Yelled hi to Neverwashasbeen on the traverse. Introduced a nice couple to the tram rock scramble -- we leap frogged each other from 5 K up. Had a great lunch with Craig at Las Casuelas before he returned to the tram to start work at 1:30 PM

Heading over to San Gorgonio tomorrow Mid-week looks cooler -- maybe a good time to hike Skyline

Sounds nice too. I like both. There's such a great crew that does Skyline that I don't mind company...if I want solitude, I can hit it midweek or do San G early. There is something, Florian, about the silence of being in the desert alone, that is at once peaceful and mysterious. And the stars...

Robin, sorry I missed seeing you! You're such great company on the trail. I don't know how we didn't see you?

Ellen, I was talking to a friendly young couple from Connecticut when you and Craig left or I might have had some lunch with you, which would have been fun. It was good seeing you. I had been telling Cesar about how we met in person the first two times (if you recall the direction you were heading!), and that if you do a 5 hour skyline that's roughly equivalent to 2 skylines in 5 hours, so you technically hold the all time record for fastest skylines!

I have to disagree with you on one point - it wasn't 5 degrees hotter, it was 20 degrees hotter! It was sixty something in the parking lot of the museum, and just a few steps into the trail it was in the 80's. We took it easy til flatrock, then I sped up a bit to make a threshold time I try to keep, and at last it was nice and cool up in the pines.

Hi to everyone else - great times and great people on a great trail...how lucky we are.
