Re: Bears in the San Jacintos. Over a number of years I have made it a point to ask people who should know (Dept. of Fish and Game, James Reserve Scientists, etc.) about bears in the San Jacintos. There is a history. In fact, over a hundred of years ago there were grizzly bears (Brown Bears) in the San Jacintos. Back in the 1930s the Forest Service brought in about thirty Black Bears to the San Bernardinos from up in the Sierras. These guys did very well in the San Bernardinos. These established what we have today north of the 10 Freeway. Every once and awhile, a Black Bear from the San Bernardinos gets across the 10 Freeway, going south. Most likely they use the animal migration passageways under the 10. These bears find very little to eat and soon head for the dumpsters of Idyllwild or Palm Springs. The Department of Fish and Game is called in and they are taken back to the San Bernardinos. Don't worry about bears grabbing your food in the San Jacintos. However, there are a lot of other less impressive guys that would love a free meal.

Lol yes there used to be. One crossing the 10 once in a blue moon will happen...I was told be a ranger the last confirmed sighting was 1997

Well, I'm going this coming weekend, and it sounds as if there isn't a lot of actual bear risk, so I'm leaving the cannister home. Pictures of Round Valley Campground appear to show trees that I can fly my food from to protect my food bag from mini-bears, and this cuts a couple pounds off packweight. If you disagree, tell me. Otherwise, if I'm eaten or if all my food is stolen by racoons who know how to rappel, I'll blame it all on you folks.
