this morning I got a late start...8:30..I huried cause I was scared, by the time I got to 3500' ( 9:30 or so) I ran into a guy in his 60's I'd imagine...he had started at 3:30 !!

Ok...I'm no genius, but if it takes you 6 hours to get to 3500'.....youre going to have a long ass day, *and* hopefully you make it.

I talked to him the first time, and then turned around after moving on about 15 mins..went back and talked again. He reassured me that he would be fine and had done it before.

He's in my thoughts tonight. Hope he's ok.

if it takes you 6 hours to get to 3500'.....

They guy in the article hal posted had accomplished 1500' elevation gain in 12 hours, which means it would have taken him about 64 hours to complete the trail if he didn't stop...

Now that's a long day!

I am new to hiking up at the tram this summer, but I am amazed at how many people try to hike to Round Valley wearing flip flops and have no water at all. They just don't get it.

Having always hiked in the desert I always carry too much water and always have some left when I get home. We saw a guy in his 60's on Wednesday up near Round Valley with no water and just tennis shoes. At least he wasn't wearing flip flops.

I also know I let myself get way out of shape, and even in perfect weather wouldn't try the Skyline Trail. I know I couldn't do it, and won't even try.

Talked to the sar guys..apparently they were almost to the 5500 level and turned around..they were asked to find shade and wait, but didnt..they continued down the mountain which created more issues, of course.

If you are in trouble and go to the point of making contact and you know someone is coming..why in the world wouldnt you do what they say to do?

I know it would be so tempting to head towards the city to get a soda...but..

Yeah, but neanderthals are used to barefoot hiking, so that is different.

Yea Cy, thats my cousin Billy..they've been using his picture in wikipedia for a few years now.
