Suggestions for route for 3 day trip.

Postby dennx » Tue Jul 12, 2011 9:04 am

We are starting at Humber Park and summiting on the second day of a three day trip. Any suggestions on a route? We are training for Mt. Whitney ;) Thanks!

I think most of are thinking there isn't much to suggest. Humber Park to SJ peak is pretty straight forward so no route to really suggest. You can go the shorter way via Wellman Divide or the longer way via Deer Springs. I'm assuming you have a map of the area so these routes should be obvious. Most ppl do summit from Humber up and down as a day hike so you'll need to fill in the extra time for a 3 day trip. Little Round Valley on the west side of summit is my favorite campsite on the mtn. There will be nice water in the creek. Or you can make a short side trip to the tramway for $5 beers!

Wonder if we should go all the way to Caramba for the first day, then summit on day two, camp at Round Valley then out on day three.

That's a great idea, more things to see, you could go to all the way to Little Round Valley the second day and then do the loop of San J, Miller, Jean, Marion and Newton Drury early on the third day then pack out, that way you catch almost all the views of the wilderness - Caramba looking east, Miller, San J looking north, northeast, Jean will give you views of the interior of the park, Marion and Newton Drury will give you views of the West and the PCT will take you back past Suicide Rock and the valley that is above Humber Park see map here http://www.parks.ca.gov/pages/636/files/MtSanJacintoSPmap.pdf it has all the distances - please post report when you are done with pictures :D enjoy

Your plan sounds good. Go to Caramba via Tahquitz too maybe.

If you're training for Whitney then hike to the summit and return to trail head. Sleep. Wake up and hike to the summit and return to the trail head. Day 3 is different. Hike to the summit and return to the trail head. Get more fluid and hike back to the summit and return to the trial head.

Or you could catch the PCT south of Pinion Crest and do a 2 day hike over the summit of SJ camping at Little Round Valley. Use day 3 to hike down to Snow Creek for a pickup.

A 3 day camping trip on San Jacinto is a fun outing, but not such a good plan in terms of training for Whitney. The summit of Whitney is roughly equivalent to Outpost camp (first camp) in terms of elevation, and the upper Tram station is roughly equivalent to Whitney Portal in terms of elevation, so if you are training for Whitney, I suggest carrying a full pack to the summit from the Tram the first day to see what your first day will be like on Whitney. If you are planning to climb Whitney in a day, do Marion Mountain trail as a day hike, then do Vivian Creek on San Gorgonio as a day hike.

training for Mt. Whitney

Hello Dennx,

May I recommend an alternative trail for you to hike to prepare for Mt. Whitney? The Joplin Trail in the Santa Ana Mountains is a 4,000 foot climb over 6 miles to the top of Santiago Peak. There is a fresh water spring 2/3rds of the way of that is fantastic. It's sigificantly cooler than the temps you'll experience in Palm Springs on the C2C trail. If this is of any interest to you, send me an IM!

Best Regards,

Our hike to Whitney is a 6 day trip from Horseshow Meadows. It will be an epic trip for us. I don't like the idea of hiking to the top of a mountain in a day and missing it all. Acclimating shouldn't be an issue. We're doing SJ and SG for some conditioning.

We started at Humber, went to Caramba camp, then Round Valley camp, summited on day 3, then out via Wellman's.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'll keep them in mind for the next SJ trip.
