Mt. San Jacinto Outdoor Recreation

Hello Fellow Hikin Fools,

On Saturday, July 2, my buddy Brent, his girlfriend Teresa and I did San Jacinto summit via the Marion mountain trail. At 4700 feet elevation gain in 6 miles it's the steepest ascent on the west side of the mountain. We got a late 9:30am start and it was getting hot. The bugs were a real nuisance, even after applying Deet up the ying yang (not literally). We all brought mosquito Head nets, but Brent & I were too macho to actually wear them. Teresa said hers worked wonderfully in keeping the gnats & flies at bay. As long as we kept moving it wasn't too bad.

The Marion Mountain trail is really steep which I don't mind until the downhill portion. The streams were flowing so we would splash water over our heads & arms to cool down. At

Little Round Valley a couple snow banks provided cooling ice to place under our hats. AAhhh....Natures air conditioning!

The summit was crowded but beautiful. We hung out on the north side for about 1/2 hour. There were some really cool gliders swooping above us for a while. Sounded like UFO's as they streaked by at about 100 feet above our heads! Really cool! A few minutes later, a big cargo type military helicopter buzzed the peak (see photos). We could clearly see the side door crew waving hello to us.

Heading down the mountain was tougher for me than the uphill because it would be really easy to sprain an ankle coming down Marion Mountain Trail. Maybe next time I'll try coming back via Deer Springs or Devil's Slide.

Anyway, It was an awesome day on a beautiful mountain with good friends. Can't wait to get up there again!

Very nice Lermo, great shots, I'm trying to fix the bites I have on the backside of my knee from Sat. It's time I got back over to the West side again, always liked going up from anywhere over there, views are assume. Thanks for the TR

Hey Patrick, yeah... I saw your post on a little 23.70 mile hike in the San Berdo's on Saturday. Ouch! Bet your feet were hurtin a wee bit after that one! I'm heading to Michigan myself at the end of the month for a family reunion. No mountains there :cry:

Sunday on the summit was cold and windy with even a bit of rain. But less people. Quite different than it looked on Saturday based on your photos.

Re: your other pic...just did the ranger trail saturday, chinkapin isn't as bad as it looks. Made it to the peak trail with no scratches. About as warm as it gets up there, temp at tram was 80@ 400 pm

Howdy Lermo

Good job and great trip report

Yes, the blasted bugs are out and tormenting hikers. I wore a head net for the first time when Perry Andrus and I hiked San Bernardino peak last Friday. Also got attacked on the way down from San Gorgonio yesterday -- went up via Dollar Lake on Sunday and down via Dry Lake on July 4th.

I and my older joints are not fond of the Marion descent. I did a car stagger with a friend once -- we came up Marion and went down Devil's Slide. I tolerated the descent much better

Thanks for the TR! Interesting with the gliders - wish I had been there. I saw a couple of gliders at maybe 14000' as I was going up Whitney a couple years ago - seemed surreal.

I'm with you on Marion - it's work going up, but that's all. Going down, it's constant pounding and gotta be careful not to trip. Love that Tram!
