Antsell Summit Can

We took it home as a souvenir when we were up there June 4th. :)

Over the last few years, there have been fewer and fewer register cans and boxes on summits. I'm getting pretty used to not finding one and have gotten to the point that I don't always sign in when I find one knowing it probably won't last long.

you know I actually did find a souvenir up there last year....we were off route below the summit rock around the south base of it, and in the dirt something caught my eye, it was one of the little metal tags with ...." Sam Fink Trail " stamped into it. That I did keep.

So whos hording the summit registers?

Hey Steve. Does Antsell require much rock climbing to summit or can one hike up? I have hiked by it several times recently while on the PCT, but have not taken the time to bag the peak. It looks pretty steep when viewed from the trail. Which trail did you take?

The easiest way up Antsell is to leave the PCT and go up the short/steep Class 2 gully. The gully leads to a fairly easy Class 3 section you'll need to climb. Once on top of the Class 3 Section, you traverse a short distance over the branches of a tree to a short gully and go up it. At the top of the gully, it's just a hop and skip to the highpoint.

Here's what the Class 3 section looks like:



Look for that little tree that's in the picture and you'll know where to go up. The class 3 section is on your right side (if you're facing the top of Antsell) when you reach the end of the Class 2 terrain in the gully.

Right now there are a lot of ducks in the gully, and a use trail most of the way up. It's amazing how those use trails have developed over the last few years. There didn't used to be a use trail or ducks all over the place in the gully.

Hi Brett, No the side trip up to antsell is easy, off the PCT in a little Grove of black oaks there is a real obvious little use trail up a bit of a slide area, just about where you think it would be as you are at the base of antsell. it's about 800' up..you come to a notch and from there you go up into the summit block roughly on the nw corner of it. it's not hard at all,a little bit of class 3 scrambling and well worth it.

How've you been ? Been out there sleeping with the Mountain Lions lately?

Thanks for all the helpful info Steve and Kathy. I think what has me confused is that I was going further north on the PCT to where it crosses over the ridge north of Antsell thinking that I would then approach the peak by following the ridge southward. It sounds like you guys are coming at it from an east to west approach and leaving the PCT a little further to the south?

Should I take a new summit register up there?

yea Brett, it is along the pct about a 1/2 mile north of the zen center trail where you find the gulley going east to west up towards the summit.

as for the can...I sure couldnt find one up there and we looked pretty well.
