AT&T & GPS

Wanted to ask some of the regulars what their experience with AT&T service is to the peak, and about any GPS tools they might have used.

I've been using an app on my iPhone called iMapMyHike to plot and record my hikes, but I just grabbed a new app called GPS Kit which seems a great deal more sophisticated. I have imported in a couple of GPX files I located from http://sites.google.com/site/jeffstrailroutes/Home/mt--san-jacinto and http://www.shyamal.com/Hikes/MtSanJ_C2C/SanJacintoC2C.html that I plan to use as guides. I have a spare battery pack for my iPhone and was planning on logging my GPS position online as I hike. Has anyone else ever had any experience with that?

soulcamp- we meet again. I have AT&T service and my phone reception is good all the way to the tram. In fact I had to use it on my first attempt at Skyline when I had to request a little help from trail angel Craig. I just started using Back Country Navigator from the APP Market. It seems to work great. As of yet I have not used it all the way up skyline- only on shorter treks. It does consume power but I have a charger that allows me to supplement my phone with AA cells. I plan on using the back country navigator Sunday.

Cool. I think I'm definitely going on Sunday (just not ready to head up there tonight). Since it's supposed to be so chilly, I may delay my start until you arrive. We'll see. In any case, I'll PM you my mobile # for reference.

I have been using Backcountry navigator on a droid. The great thing about it is that you dont need cell service for it to work. You download the topo map for the area you are going via 3g or wifi prior to your hike. The GPS does suck the battery, so use it only when needed.
