Cactus to Clouds - Ramon Rd Trailhead-Be Aware of Break In's

I just summarized our C2C success on May 21st in another post, but just wanted to let everyone know our car was broken into and wallets and other items stolen.

We choose Ramon Rd. as the start rather than the Museum trailhead because I had previously done this hike years ago from Ramon Rd. While there are some houses nearby, the end of Ramon Rd. is somewhat isolated (no houses look directly on the parking sites). The spots are lit with a street light. We left our car there at 5:30am, and did net get back to it until 9:30pm, to return to broken glass, items stolen from our car, and wallets gone (even though hidden). Was dumb for us to leave any valuables in the car. Just sad you cannot trust society.

So, I would not leave your car parked at this site, or, I would park near one of the homes and walk to the trailhead. Bummer

Thanks for the heads up about the museum problem as well. Arggh. Any suggestions where to park in the future? We plan on doing this one again in October!

Ramon break-ins have been a problem for several years now. It happens over and over and it's clear a criminal gang knows to target that spot. The police have been told but just shrug their shoulders. But parking at the DM is not much safer. What I do (I cannot guarantee this is safe, though!) is park NEAR the Ramon trailhead, but not at it--I park on one of the nearby residential streets in front of a house--NOT on the dirt shoulder. That's just asking for it--i.e. advertising that you are on a hike. Important, though, to remember that you CAN"T park on the last residential street (I forget its name), it has" no parking signs" and they DO TOW. (Some rich creep got the city to ban parking on "his' street. More reasons why millionaires suck!) So, if you are going to be hiking all day, park on one of the three cross-streets before the last street, in front of a house (not in a driveway though!). You'll have to walk a couple of blocks to the trailhead, but I think it makes a break-in much less likely. At any rate, so far this has worked for me--but OTOH no one in their right mind would break into my car

When I did Skyline the first time 3 years ago I read about break-ins and someone suggested parking in the parking structure of the Hyatt. That's what I did that time. Of course it's an added expense.

Thanks for the tips! Parking and paying at the Hyatt sounds like a good idea - would have been a lot cheaper than what this just cost me!
