Skyline in the Mist

Howdy All :)

After checking the weather reports for the summits of San Jacinto and San Gorgonio, Sally and I opted to hike Skyline yesterday. It was raining when I left Riverside and continued to rain until I turned off on 111 -- then Viola! -- no rain. On the trail, we were captivated by exquisite clouds over the San Rosas and beams of sunlight illuminating the desert (all we needed was Handel's Hallelujah chorus). At about 2 K, we were treated to a gorgeous rainbow over the 4 K ridge.

When we got our first glimpse of San Jacinto a bit before 4 K, we paused in awe -- she was shrouded in rapidly moving low clouds and mist. On the Never Ending Ridge, we looked back at the desert and watched a curtain of mist slowly roll in and obscure our view. From this point on, we were enveloped in mist. The mist made the foilage wet and soaked our pants up to our knees and our boots -- we squished as we hiked. Sally noted that her Merrell Moab Ventilators were now Spongenators

Took a leisurely lunch at Flat Rock and shared a thermos with yummy chicken noodle soup. The heat we generated climbing up through the manzanita felt good and before long we were on the traverse. Popped up at Coffman's Crag -- wait, where's the crag, who stole it? After grinding up the final 400 ft to Grubbs Notch we were treated to blue skies. The recent storm only left traces of snow in Long Valley. Scrambled up the rocks and enjoyed celebratory beverages before heading down for great food at Las Casuelas.

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

Skyline in the mist? Nice to see you two go ape over the mountain. Got any pics of the "special effects?"

Speaking of Moab Ventilators, I like mine, but my laces just shredded. I've only had the darned things a month or two. Grrr. :x

Great TR Ellen! I can almost see the images you described in my mind. Sally has the right idea with those Merrell Moab Spongenators. Mine have lasted a year and are just now almost ready for replacement.

When I walked into work today, my boss (who I hadn't seen since Saturday) asked if I had recovered from the Skyline moonlight hike. I told him that not only had I recovered, but I did it again yesterday. He said I need help. I think of it as "having a hair of the dog that bit me." If you hang out with Ellen enough you're bound to do Skyline twice in a week sooner or later.

Seriously, though, the weather on the peaks looked very inhospitable and Skyline looked like the best bet. Besides, seeing all those wildflowers by headlamp Sunday AM was a teaser and I wanted to see them in daylight. They were beautiful with droplets of moisture on them.

HJ, there are pics, but I need to wait 'til hubby gets home this weekend to post them as I STILL haven't gotten around to learning how to do it myself. I made a movie of the mist blowing in the wind, too. Stay tuned!

Ellen - or should I say leader of Skyline Addicts (not so) Anonymous. Have you been keeping track of how many Skylines you have done in the last year?
Thanks for letting me know that you were going on this hike, but I am glad that i missed the mist. :) Actually I thought you would get rain and snow as well.
In hindsight the weather was good to you. Maria says she cant keep up with your fast pace, while I cant keep up with Maria. Sally congratulations too. I am looking forward to your pictures. I was thinking of going this Saturday, but my back is not ready for it at this time.
Steve and Carla - I just noticed your messages and replied today. Sorry for the delay.

Howdy Cy :)

Since you have the body fat of bamboo, I was concerned that it would be too nippy. We were prepared for rain and snow and didn't get either.

I'm so sorry about your back
