Hi Rick,
Wow! I am so awed by your accomplishment. Being familiar with your story, and having seen the pics of the injury, I would have never imagined you would be able to do a hike like that in just 5 months. Thanks for the inspiration!

Recovery Hike up C2C

Postby wb » Mon Mar 14, 2011 11:29 pm

Very admirable accomplishment for a non-rehab hike, let alone recovering and rehabbing from an injury. Hats off to you! :)

Hey Rick! Good to see you out there. As usual, physical challenges don't daunt you, but I'm hoping that the pain switches over from the ankle to just the muscles soon. You thrive on that kind of suffering!

Nobody's done a quad Skyline yet - think the ankle will be up for an autumn attempt? All my bets are on your being fit enough, but joints kinda give us a "yes" or "no" based on their own criteria. How'd it feel after you got back down?

By the way, that feeling of disconnect (wondering who the previous Rick was who did 3 Skylines) can drive you nuts, huh? I'm with you - even if I'm just out of town for a couple days and can't get in any training, I'll be thinking "I wonder if I can still make it up Skyline anymore? I probably couldn't even run a 5k" How did you maintain your high levels of cardio fitness during the down time?

Congrats again. Lookin' to see you on the trail again soon.

The foot is a bit swollen right now and I'm limping around a bit at work. It will probably be that way most of the week. This has been normal however after each weekend and I don't seem any worse this time than after prior weekends. I would really like the pain to finally go away but it might not.

I think you'll be the first to do a quad Skyline Zip! I know I couldn't have done a 4th one after I did the triple. I'll be pleased if I can do a double again (which I feel reasonably sure I could do within a few months). I think trying to do a triple again will be the ultimate challenge for me.

I didn't really keep up cardio during my down time. As soon as I was able I did do a bit at the gym and did some bike riding but I definitely still need to work on getting my cardio back in shape.

I'll have to have surgery again sometime after summer to remove all the hardware (plate and 9 screws). It's not mandatory but the OS suggested it. There's a bunch of scar tissue that needs to be removed as well.

:D Congrats Rick and welcome back! Your adventures were always impressive, now they're also inspiring. I'm hoping that the day will come when you no longer have pain with each step. Cheers!
