Technical routes to the top

Postby TacoDelRio » Mon Feb 28, 2011 1:18 pm

I'm not sure how else to say this, but I'm looking for a technically-difficult route to the summit of San J or Miller or Folly. Think Snow Creek in length and endurance, but with 5th class rock climbing and ice climbing, not just snow. I've been looking at those big granite buttresses and pinnacles, but I don't want something with a ton of pitches of 5.10 rock when I'll be going alone anyway. Know what I mean?

Anyone got any ideas? Routes nobody talks about much, things written in books covered in dust?

If you don't mind the company, I'd love to snoop and poop around there to get an idea.

The ridge to the west of SC, as in the one that goes up to Folly? I thought you guys did that? I've had my eye on it for a few years.

Sounds like your type of climb, Taco.

neverwashasbeen wrote:I only know of one ascent up the West Fork of Snow Creek from the bottom. It took much longer than the experienced party anticipated. Technical ice and rock climbing, ran out of food, several days overdue. The member of the party I talked to said it was the hardest climb he'd ever done.

Might be fun, or not.

Taco,

Are you thinking of doing a banzai one day alpine blitz, or bivying up there for a day or two? If you are thinking of doing a bivy, pm me. I've been thinking of doing a 2 day SC adeventure since looking at all those pictures last year. I'll offer moral support and belay you up the first pitch... after that you'll probably be on your own buddy. I just need to find some good lightweight alpine boots that I can stand in crampons all day in. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Sincrerely and with best regards,

Pat

Thanks Tim! Didn't see the post by Brad before. Technical rock and ice + more than someone bargained for = good thing.

Thanks Skunkboy. I'll be going light, intending to do it as a single day, though it may carry over to a second day, unlikely though. I appreciate the offer, but I will be going alone. This kinda stuff is one of the only outlets I have for "life", know what I mean?

Cheers

Hey Taco, what a beauty that line up to Miller is. Once on snow the climb looks pretty straight forward. Its just a matter of having coverage at the lower elevations and then finding a bypass like the PCT route to get around the lower, thicker foliage. I've been eyeing this route for 3 years now. I see it on my drive home almost everyday. I'm all in for doing some exploring!
