Matt Webb sent me those GPS data points. You could ask him by following the link.... His dad actually did some of the survey work for the construction of the tramway.

Kevin: We're looking at doing Russell on August 18th as a day hike. Have you done Russell yet?

Lee - I have not started yet. I want to find someone with journalistic and computer experience to combine with since I lack both of these qualities.
I do not know Philip Ferranti as he is not a Skyliner.

I have a lot of respect for anyone that can grind out a book. I've often thought about the motorhome life and writing about where I am at the moment. Sounds wonderful but I can't even get it done here in the comfort of my own home.

I should have been awake during the college writing course.

Hey Walt, maybe you could take a course AND travel. If you did the motorhome thing and took a course at the same time, you could title your book, "College Writing Review on the Road: Asleep at the Wheel". Two birds with one stone.

energy

Postby guest » Fri Jul 06, 2007 8:17 am

Hi Mike,

Sorry for the delay, if you still check this;
Perry & Ellen & others have good advise of food, here's what I do.

I eat a lot the night before, don't really eat a breakfast, (maybe a very small bowl of cereal) or a few dates. My friend, who is a regular Skyliner, eats a breakfast. If you do, do it early, as the blood will be needed for the 1st mile.
I like Gookinaid (Hydrolyte), which I put in one Camelbak bladder, the other water with a 1/2 teaspoon of seasalt, ( this gives me 130-160 ozs).
I eat an apple in the 2nd mile, a Cliff bar & Gensoy bar, (they melt in the heat) and 2 Crank gels (by E gel), 150 calories per, not as thick, still rather sweet.
I eat about every 45 mins. to an hr.( a bar then a gel) and make sure that most of the solids are down by flat rock, your just breathin too hard to eat after that unless you stop, besides, it won't digest much by the top if you keep a good pace.
I like dates for quick energy, and sometimes, just for fun, my magic mix of sunflower seeds, almonds & chocolate covered expresso beans (you have to watch the milk content though).
If I go with 6-7 hr. people, I may bring a PB & J or light turkey samy, but
that's rare.

Hope this helps,

ss

SS you're killing me. Us old fat men don't have to wait until flat rock to be breathing hard.

I agree with the eat it the day before item and like something non-solid in the morning. Also jumbo raisins or prunes while on the trail. Once I'm on top there's something about shelling roasted peanuts that keeps me from running off too fast.

If hiking with someone that will be really stretching to make the trip I'll sometimes secret a beer on ice at the bottom of my pack. Somethings just need to be celebrated in the moment.
