Hmmm, maybe each company specializes! When I'm anywhere but in the middle of a city, Verizon is sketchy at best. My experience on Skyline, the PCT, etc. has generally been very bad reception. In contrast, last summer in Yosemite (while I couldn't even make a phone call from Tuolumne with Verizon) my brother, who has AT&T, was using his cell to reprogram a client's computer from the same spot!

So, it sounds like technology can irritate you just as much as it does me! I've tried both AT&T and Verizon - they both have plenty of dead areas. The technology isn't perfect yet, but I wish it wouldn't always seem to fail when I need it most.

Incidentally, this reminds me of the old joke about Cingular. Where did they come up with the name Cingular? They only have one tower.

Yuk yuk.

As a tech guy who has supported cell phones in the past I can say its never as easy as just the carrier. Although some carriers will clearly have better coverage in some areas, its really a matter of carrier/phone.

In the basement of my home I can get flawless reception on some ATT phones, and barely any on others.

Up skyline on my old BlackjackII with ATT I had perfect reception, until I crossed into the Valley, then nothing. And mostly nothing all the way to 10,000 (when it got dark and cold and I had to beat a hasty retreat).

My only interest in cell coverage is for the "Help, Ive fallen and cant get up call" anyways. So for newbies, like myself, it is good to know the best overall carrier as that is a nice backup we hope we dont ever need.

I get reception all the way up Skyline with AT&T but lose it immediately I walk away from the Notch. Then nothing until the Peak. Much to my surprise I was able to make a call from PCT at the junction with Cedar Spring earlier in the year (to the rangers at Indian Canyons, begging them not to tow my car).

Managed to get lost walking the streets in the Las Palmas district of Palm Springs a few weeks ago - found my way home with my iPhone's GPS! I've had a look at a few trail apps, would be interested in learning more about any decent ones...

That's the way to do it.

Hey, no biggie. Just take the tram up and then ride downhill. Piece of cake. Uh, better get some new brake pads first though.

The phone I use when on San Jacinto is located on Mt Laguna. I have good coverage on all the south facing slopes. :)
